Institutional Mission & Strategic Direction
The mission and strategic direction of Kennesaw State University are established
and modified within the context of the vision, mission, and strategic goals of the
University System of Georgia (USG) as adopted by its Board of Regents, KSU's governing
board. From 1994 to 2001, the Board of Regents adopted and implemented Access to
Academic Excellence in the New Millennium as its strategic vision for the University
System of Georgia. As part of that strategic plan under the Mission Development
and Review Policy Directive, the official mission statements of all 34 institutions
in the USG were thoroughly revised, standardized substantially within Carnegie classifications,
and approved by the governing board in 1996. Continuing to build upon the successes
and commitments of Access to Academic Excellence, the Board of Regents adopted its
current 2002-2007 strategic plan for the University System entitled, Creating a
More Educated Georgia. In accordance with the Board’s strategic plan, KSU was authorized
by the Regents in 2005 to propose a limited number of professional doctoral programs
and evolve into a Doctoral Research-Intensive Carnegie classification. KSU’s first
professional doctoral program was approved for implementation in 2007 and the institution’s
mission statement was revised accordingly in August 2006.
Within the context of the Board’s statewide strategic plans and directives, institutional
strategic thinking and planning at KSU are led by the President and his Cabinet.
Vice presidents, deans, department heads, faculty, staff, and students all play
vital roles in setting and implementing the strategic direction of their units toward
the fulfillment of institutional and University System goals. The Vice President
for Academic Affairs has the assigned responsibility for facilitating periodic review
of the Institutional Mission Statement and updates to KSU's Strategic Plan. Many
of the work products of the Center for Institutional Effectiveness and its Office
of Institutional Research & Information Management support informed decision making,
strategic thinking, and planning at all levels of the institution.
